Wake Forest Football Scrimmage No. 3 (08/25/2009)

10:30 Gary: Welcome everyone to the Deacs' third football scrimmage this season. The team is out on the field warming-up and we should hopefully get started soon.

10:33 Gary: We're here on the sixth floor of Deacon Tower in the media room waiting for the scrimmage to start but I thought I would share our pre-scrimmage entertainment. There is a window washer hanging hanging by a rope cleaning all of the glass windows on Deacon Tower.

10:33 Gary: How many people would want to hang by a rope to wash the windows?

10:35 Gary: We have a mixed vote here. Our very own "Voice of the Deacs" Stan Cotton says there wouldn't be enought money in the world that would make him leave the booth for window washing.

10:38 Gary: Another note from this morning, the Port-A-Johns have been delivered to the parking lot. Don't know if that is huge news to anyone right now by come Sept. 5, I think they may come into play.

10:43 Gary: The offense is wearing black today. The first two scrmmages, they donned the white practice uniforms.

10:47 Gary: Marshall and Jordan Williams along with Devon Brown. Coach Grobe did mention today that he was going to mix-and-match a bunch of guys in different situations so I don't think we can put to much stake in the depth chart with this scrimmage.

10:48 Gary: McManus rolled out and hit Danny Dembry on a 22 yard gain down to the 33 yard line. To the best of my knowledge, it looks like second team O vs. first team D. Again, a mix-and-match of guys though.

10:49 Gary: Lots of substituting in and out so far. Looks more like a game situation.

10:50 Gary: On 3rd and 12, Kyle Wilber blew through the line and sacked McManus to end the drive around the 40.

10:51 Gary: Riley Skinner under center now. Looks like the first team O vs. the second team D.

10:56 Gary: No. 1 offense is back in there. Riley just hit Chris Givens down the right sideline for 21 yard gain.

10:58 Gary: Riley hit Givens again but he was hit hard by Scott Betros and lost the ball. Michael Williams picked it up and ran it back 63 yards for a TD

11:00 Gary: Everything is TBA right now. They plan to scrimmage but they haven't set a time. Stay tuned to the website for all the details.

11:01 Gary: Incomplete pass on the 1st and 10.

11:01 Gary: Nice eight-yard run by Kevin Harris. 3rd and 2.

11:02 Gary: Another nice run for Harris. Pick-up of five for a first down.

11:03 Gary: Kevin Harris picked up another five. 2nd and 5 from the defense 47.

11:04 Gary: Run by Pendergrass was snuffed out by Joey Ehrmann. Loss of a couple.

11:04 Gary: Riley's pass was intended for Jordan Williams by Michael Williams made a nice break on the ball for the break-up. End of drive.

11:06 Gary: On 2nd and 7, McManus hit Dembrey over the middle and after a missed tackle, he picked up almost 10 yards for a first down.

11:08 Gary: Really good run this time by Pendergrass. Picked up eight on a nice cutback. 1st and 10 from the 39.

11:09 Gary: McManus' pass on 1st down was a bit high.

11:09 Steve: Just overthrew Matt Hartford

11:10 Gary: Another incomplete pass. McManus was under a bit of pressure and his bullet pass was a bit out of the reach of Devon Brown.

11:10 Gary: Sack by Wil Wright on a nice stunt up the middle. End of drive.

11:11 Gary: Skinner is back in. On his first play, he found Devon Brown for a gain of 3.

11:12 Gary: False start. 2nd and 12.

11:12 Gary: Long pass down the middle was intended for Givens but it was just a little long. Givens had a step on the DBs.

11:15 Gary: Keeper by Stachitas didn't pickup any. 3rd and 9.

11:20 Gary: Skinner's pass was complete to Devon Brown for two yards. 3rd and 3.

11:21 Gary: Run by Pendergrass to the right picked up seven to move the chains again. Ball is on the defense's 29.

11:22 Gary: Run by Pendergrass was stopped by Ehrmann and Souza for one yard.

11:22 Gary: False start by the offense again. 2nd and 14.

11:23 Gary: Givens got the ball on the end-around but there was holding on the play so the ball is taken back to the 39-yard line. 2nd and 20

11:24 Gary: Skinner's pass was complete to Dembrey down the right sideline to the six-yard line. Nice play. Dembrey fought through defensive holding and still made the catch.

11:24 Gary: Pendergrass picked up two yards up the middle. 2nd and goal from the four.

11:25 Gary: Rush by Tommy Bohanon for one-yard. 3rd and goal from the three. 12th play of the drive coming up.

11:26 Gary: Another run by Bohanon right up the gut got stopped at the goalline by Tripp Russell and Erhmann. 4th and goal on the one.

11:26 Gary: Skinner with the QB sneak for the offense's first score of the day.

11:27 Gary: There was holding on the first extra point attempt so Popham was forced to knock home the extra point from 30-yards out.

11:28 Gary: For those of you scoring at home, it's now 7-6. (The defense didn't kick the extra point on the fumble recovery )

11:29 Gary: McManus is back in. The drive is starting this time at the defense's 15-yard line. On the first play, Dixon broke a few tackles and was pushed out at the one-yard line. On the next play, Dixon took it over the top for the TD.

11:30 Gary: Beam knocks home the extra point this time.

11:32 Gary: For the second-straight play, Gelo jumps through and sacks Skinner. How about this, 3rd and 25 from the 30-yard line.

11:32 Steve: Haven't noticed him but that's not to say he hasn't been in. He has not caught a pass today.

11:33 Gary: Riley rolled right and couldn't find anyone so he took off and picked up 15-yards. He got back to the original line of scrimmage, which was the 15. Popham came on and hit the 32-yard field goal.

11:34 Gary: McManus' second turn with the offense from the 15-yard line. Run by Dixon for a gain of two on first down.

11:35 Gary: Another run by Dixon but Wilber was all over the play and stopped him for a loss of one. 3rd and 9

11:36 Gary: Pass by McManus to Marshall Williams over the middle was complete and after a good block from Jordan Williams, he made it down to the 6-yard line.

11:37 Gary: Beam came on for the 22-yard field goal but the snap and hold was a little off and the kick went wide left.

11:37 Gary: Skinner back in to start the drive from the 15-yard line.

11:38 Steve: Skylar has not taken any snaps at QB so it would appear that he will be at WR.

11:39 Gary: Pendergrass then finished it off with a TD run throught the left side from nine-yards out. Newman came on and calmly stroked in the extra point.

Is our O-Line just getting beaten a lot or does the D-Line look like they could be a good unit this year?

11:39 Gary: Out comes the yellow pennies so it can only mean one thing, special teams practice.

11:39 Steve: Both have looked good at times. Gelo Orange had a nice sack against the first O-line. But the line has provided good protection at other times.

11:40 Gary: Riley is 7-of-11 from 86 yards and McManus is 4-of-11 for 54 yards.

11:40 Gary: Running the ball, Josh Adams has 5 carries for 24 yards, Kevin Harris had four 4 runs for 19 yards and Pendergrass has 10 carries for 17 yards and a TD.

11:43 Gary: The defense has a total of six sacks so far. Gelo Orange and Wil Wright each have a pair of sacks on the day.

Is the scrimmage over after the special teams get done practicing?

11:49 Gary: Probably not. They are going to get some good work in with the special teams here at the stadium because it offers a better camera angle to get video of what's going on. Usually, they will come back out after the special teams are done and will work on more situational stuff.

11:50 Gary: Cam has played today along with Andrew Parker. The offense hasn't been hitting on all cylinders today and the TE's haven't got in the mix much.

11:53 Gary: Cline Beam has looked good in kickoff situations. He's knocked most of his kicks deep into the endzone. Jimmy Newman just looks smooth with all of his kicks. For a freshman, he is showing a lot of poise.

11:58 Gary: Kevin Harris picked his way around the left side for seven yards but the play was called back for holding. 1st and 19 from the offenses 26.

11:59 Gary: Skinner found Devon Brown for on the right side for an 11-yard gain. He was knocked out of bounds by John Stamper.

11:59 Gary: On 2nd and 9, Kevin Harris headed over the right side for no gain. Wil Wirght and Scott Betros on the tackle.

12:00 Gary: Skinner's pass on the right sideline was broken up on a nice play by Morgan Harris.

12:01 Gary: McManus to start the drive back at the 35.

12:02 Gary: McManus' pass was complete to Matt Hartford and then he was drilled by Kyle Wilber at the 46. 1st and 10.

12:03 Gary: Run by Pendergrass around the right side went for 21 yards and then another 15 was tacked on for a horse collar tackle. 1st and 10 from the defense's 19.

12:04 Gary: This time Pendergrass was stopped for a 2-yard loss, but there was a facemask penalty on the defense, giving the O a 1st down at the 3.

There was a mix-and-match all over the field this morning and it was tough to tell who was on the first or the second teams.

12:18 Gary: I wouldn't say in camp but today, he has looked good. Beam's missed field goal was due to a bad snap and hold.

12:20 Gary: A good pass by Cross was broken up on a nice play by Brandon Ghee. He followed Hartford across the middle and batted the ball away with his left hand. I couldn't think of a better way to end the scrimmage.

How did the secondary look overall? In particular, the second team.

12:26 Gary: Overall, the secondary and the defense as a whole looked very good today. It was tough to tell who was on the second team defense but as a collective group, the defense had a very good scrimmage.
