Terps break camp Saturday afternoon; Team votes captains
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins completed another step in their preparation for the 2009 season as football camp came to an end Saturday.
The Terps, who open the regular season at No. 12 California one week from today, spent about 90 minutes working out at the on-campus practice facility. The team was scheduled to have a pair of practices Saturday.
"We cut it short today," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "The kids were tired and it was humid. I didn't want to get anyone hurt. We worked very hard all camp. I've been very pleased with camp. I'll be anxious to see where we are when we get back."
After a fairly sharp morning practice which focused on the California game plan, Friedgen decided the evening workout was not necessary. Following practice, the team held meetings and a short lifting session, and is now off until Monday.
"I feel like they've done everything they can do between winter, spring, summer and two-a-days," Friedgen said. "Now it's just a time to get ready to play. We'll see where we are around this time next Saturday."
Friedgen announced after Saturday's practice that the team has voted four captains for the 2009 season.
Preseason Maryland Terrapins Football Camp Log: Day 15
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins hit the practice field Tuesday morning for the first of two sessions scheduled for the day, and now have just two more days in which they will hold a pair of workouts.
The Terps will hold a light practice Thursday morning before a scrimmage that evening. They will also have two sessions on Saturday before getting into their normal game-week routine starting Monday.
Now 15 days into fall camp, players are fighting through fatigue and soreness, but head coach Ralph Friedgen has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
"I think they're working hard right now," said Friedgen. "It's just the middle of two-a-days. It's the dog days. They're tired. They're sore. They're beat up. They're looking to get out of this stuff and play a game, and yet we still have work to do. I kind of told them this morning, `here`s where your leadership shows up. I'm not going to say a word today. I'm going to see if you guys can do it on your own,' and our effort was better this morning. I was pleased with our effort."
Preseason Maryland Terrapins Football Camp Log: Day 14
College Park, Md. - The Terps hit the practice field Monday hoping to build on the progress made in Sunday's 117-play scrimmage, the second of three that will be held this preseason.
The biggest improvement Sunday was the running game. Redshirt freshman Gary Douglas had a team-best 122 yards on 17 carries, while Morgan Green ran for 56 yards on 10 carries. The two are in a battle for the third-string running back position behind All-ACC returnee Da'Rel Scott and sophomore Davin Meggett.
"Right now I think (Gary is) right up there with Morgan," said head coach Ralph Friedgen after Monday's 90-minute practice. "He's giving Morgan everything he wants. I didn't think Morgan practiced poorly yesterday, I just though Gary practiced real well. His pass protection is good, he broke down once or twice on pickups, and so did Morgan. I thought Morgan was better yesterday than what he has been playing. It's competition. It's a good thing."
Maryland vs. Virginia Tech Football Game Sold Out
Terps and Hokies to meet Nov. 14 in College Park
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland and Virginia Tech will play before a sold-out Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, the department of athletics announced Tuesday.
The Terrapins and Hokies are scheduled to play on Saturday, Nov. 14. Game time will be announced in early November.
"This is a tremendous show of support for our team," said Brian Ullmann, senior associate athletics director. "We have a great home schedule this year, and we look forward to more sellouts this season."
Despite the sellout, Terrapin fans still have a chance to see the game in person as a limited number of tickets are being held in reserve, exclusively for new season-ticket holders. In addition, new suites and mezzanine seats remain available on a multi-year, annual and single-game basis.
Season tickets for the seven-game home slate are still
available for as low as $135 and single-game tickets went on sale Saturday. Season-ticket packages will remain on sale until the first home game (James Madison, Sept. 12).
Maryland Terrapins hold annual Media Day then hit the field for first workout
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins capped off a busy opening day of preseason football camp Monday night with a spirited two-plus hour workout at the on-campus practice facility.
With 21 newcomers among the 105 student-athletes in camp, close to half of the session was devoted to individual work.
Head coach Ralph Friedgen liked what he saw during the first of 28 preseason workouts.
"The freshmen did much better than I anticipated as far as knowing what to do," Friedgen said. "For the most part we're in pretty good shape. We have a couple guys that have to get better. I think the only thing you're going to be able to tell (on the first day) is who knows their assignments and who's giving good effort. That's about it."
Two-year starter Chris Turner and Jamarr Robinson were the lone quarterbacks on the roster in the spring, but they have been joined by a pair of talented true freshmen in C.J. Brown and Danny O'Brien.
